The Pawnbroker

Add Review/Comment
Filming in stark black and white, the recently deceased Sidney Lumet brings us cinéma vérité, anticipating his masterpieces Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico. This 1964 classic features Oscar-nominated Rod Steiger, while Quincy Jones’ score punctuates every movement. We feel the trauma in flashes and flashbacks experienced by Sol Nazerman, a pawnbroker on New York’s East 116th Street with a number on his arm. Lumet breaks ground in depicting the wrenching power of Holocaust survivor guilt. In English, German, Spanish with subtitles. 116 minutes.
