A short walk on Christmas Eve will take you to one of the loveliest of Boston holiday traditions– bell ringing and Christmas caroling in Beacon Hill's Louisburg Square. The Beacon Hill Bell Ringers will regale crowds with holiday melodies starting at 7:30 p.m. Bell ringers move from house-to-house. Some in the crowd sing along while others just watch and listen.  All are welcome.

Margaret Homer Shurcliff, wrote about the evening in 1924, when this tradition of bell ringing began, “…on Christmas Eve we started our carol ringing standing in the front yard of 55 Mount Vernon Street. Our success surprised us. The crowd grew and grew and applauded as loudly as they could, their hands muffled by woolen gloves. We only knew about six tunes so we rang those twice and moved on to another doorway. The crowd followed us and others joined the throng.” (From her autobiography, Lively Days.)
