The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England Cultural Events Committee presents “SPOTLIGHT ON GREEK FILMS”. A series of award winning and critically acclaimed feature length Greek movies, featuring comedy, adventure, and drama. Come laugh, cry or sit on the edge of your seat, and experience the music, costumes, scenery, language and lifestyle of various periods in our Greek history. The first film to be presented is 'BRIDES-NIFES' Directed by Greek Director, Pantelis Voulgaris, produced by Martin Scorsese and accompanied by a nostalgic musical score composed by Stamatis Spanoudakis. It is the story about Niki Charalambidou, a dressmaker from Samothraki and the American photographer, Norman Lewis in the summer of 1922 in Smyrna. Niki is one of the 700 “mail order” brides who are being chosen from a photo and come from every part of Greece, Turkey, Russia and Armenia. All of them carry the picture of an unknown groom, and their wedding dress in their suitcases. Some of them emigrate through agencies, orphanages or church institutions. Niki is travelling to marry Prodomos, a tailor she never met, in place of her sister, who could not face living in a foreign land.
