Jack Lemmon plays C.C. Baxter, a struggling nobody at an insurance firm in New York City. He offers his Upper West Side apartment to four of his managers to use for extra-marital affairs on the sly. He lives with the fact that his neighbors think that he's a "good time Charlie" and even goes so far as to try and accept that the girl of his dreams, elevator operator Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacClaine) is one of his manager's mistresses....
