Miguel was born in Los Angeles, the son of a Latino man and an African American woman. At age 5, Miguel decided he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Michael Jackson and become a dancer. Miguel continued to develop his passion for performing, and began to seriously pursue a career as a singer in his early teens. His hard work paid off and in November 2005, he signed with Jive Records and began contributing songs he wrote to other artists on the label, including Usher and Musiq Soulchild. In May of 2010 Miguel's debut single, "All I Want is You" was released, featuring the rapper J. Cole. His debut album, also titled All I Want is You, was released by Jive in November 2010, and generated three singles that reached the top 10 on the R&B songs chart in 2010 and 2011.

In addition to singing, Miguel has also written songs for Usher, Jaheim and other performers. He also has produced music in the past, including his 2012 series of Art Dealer Chic EPs, and can play the guitar. His second studio album, Kaleidoscope Dream, will be released on October 2, 2012. The album will released in three parts, the first EP Kaleidoscope Dream: The Water Preview was released on July 31, 2012, and the second EP Kaleidoscope Dream: The Air Preview will be released on September 11, 2012. Both contain 3 tracks and the album will include all six songs along with 5 additional songs.
