Science on Screen: EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
October 29, 2012
Director Tim Burton's richly imagined, bittersweet fantasy stars Johnny Depp as Edward. a young man created by by an eccentric inventor (Vincent Price) who dies just before he can finish him, leaving him with scissors instead of hands. When a kindly Avon lady discovers him, incomplete and all alone, she brings him home to live with her family in the pastel paradise of suburbia, where the gentle outsider attemps to fit in. With Dianne Wiest, Winona Ryder, Alan Arkin, and Anthony Michael Hall.
Edward Scissorhands asks what it means to be human. Unlike Edward, we weren't built piecemeal in a Gothic castle atop a hill. So when and how did we become us? Before the screening, Jeremy DeSilva, an assistant professor of biological anthropology, discusses some recent discoveries that are revealing that human evolution is much more complicated - and fascinating - than anyone previously imagined.
