    Before Night Falls

ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage presents Before Night Falls.  Spanish actor Javier Bardem gives a star-making performance as Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in this feature directed by artist Julian Schnabel, based on Arenas’ autobiography of the same name. From his provincial childhood to his studies in Havana in the 1960s, the film follows Arenas as he strives to live openly as a homosexual and pursue his literary ambitions. Both struggles land him prison many times over the years until he decides he must leave his homeland for the United States and a new life.
