A Tribute to Benjamin Britten
Presented by The Paul Madore Chorale
November 11, 2012
The Paul Madore Chorale will present a concert featuring three of the best known works of Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), each very different in style and structure. The Ceremony of Carols is a setting of several British carols for chorus and soloists accompanied by a harp, and done in the style of an Anglican choral evensong. A Simple Symphony was originally intended as a learning experience for young musicians in the style of the symphony, and will be performed by a string quintet. Rejoice in the Lamb is a festival cantata for four soloists, choir, and organ, and is based on the eighteenth century poem Jubilate Agno by Christopher Smart. The soloists for A Ceremony of Carols will be Emily Halpern, Harp; Kathleen Sharry, Soprano; and Joanne Jonsson, Mezzo-soprano. A Simple Symphony will be played by Alan Hawryluk & Judy Takata, Violins; Joan Brayton, Viola; Cheryl Campbell, Cello; and Quentin Hodges, Bass. The accompanist for Rejoice in the Lamb will be Robert Littlefield, Organ and the soloists will be Donna Gale, Soprano; Pamela Spencer, Mezzo-Soprano; Brendan O' Brine, Tenor; and Loring Lincoln, Baritone.
