 Beethoven’s Serenade, full of life and good cheer, conjures images of music floating through an open window, while Ives’ unique use of American folk tunes, anthems and church hymns – sometimes all at once – creates a sound both cacophonous and warmly familiar. In an ongoing effort to feature the sometimes forgotten viola, Dahl’s Divertimento leads into Diamond’s quintet, driving and energetic from beginning to end.
