The 30th season finale opens with Menotti's expressive and exciting Suite for Two Cellos and Piano. The Shostakovich Piano Quintet that follows received so much enthusiasm from the audience upon its premiere that the final two movements were performed again, a tradition sometimes observed today with enough prodding. The program concludes with arguably the greatest work in the chamber music repertoire, Schubert's String Quintet in C major. Composed just weeks before Schubert’s death in 1828 and not premiered until 22 years later, it continues to touch listeners in a very special and personal way.
