    A Strindberg Christmas

Join us in the Nordic Hall for a cosy afternoon of coffee, tea, and theatre!
    featuring:
AUGUST STRINDBERG’S SHORT PLAY “THE STRONGER”
TRANSLATED AND DIRECTED BY ULRIKA BRAND

In “The Stronger,” two women, Mrs. X and Miss Y (played by Boston actors Allison Vanouse and Lauren Eichler), run into each other in a café on Christmas Eve. Their conversation is brief, yet revealing and profound.

The performance will also include a dramatic reading of a chapter from The Red Room, Strindberg's 1879 novel, featuring Ronald Lacey. Strindberg's satirical work about the life of artists, merchants and politicians in Stockholm was his literary breakthrough and is considered Sweden's first modern novel. This passage, taken from a new translation by Ulrika Brand, depicts life among theatre artists.

Ron Lacey recently completed a run of Uncle Vanya for the Apollinaire Theatre in Chelsea, where his performance of Astrov earned him an IRNE nomination (Independent Reviewers of New England) for best actor.

Ulrika Brand is a theatre director and translator who has translated “The Stronger” and other works as part of the Strindberg 2012 Festival, an international celebration of Strindberg’s centennial.
