Full of contrasts, the former French colonies of Laos and Cambodia range from tropical beaches to sun baked plains, rolling hills to forested mountains, and the mighty Mekong River, the main source of transportation for centuries. Both countries teem with wildlife, from elephants and tigers and freshwater dolphins to jungles filled with birds and tropical plant life. While Cambodia is well known for the majestic temples of Angkor Wat, Laos also has significant archaeological sites, including the enigmatic Plain of Jars and the pre-Angkorian ruins of Champasak.
