On January 13 we once again pair classical and 20th century string quartets to illustrate continuity and change in that vital chamber music medium. Mozart’s late String Quartet No. 21 in D, K. 575 shows his expanded depth of expression, while Bartok’s magnificent Fifth Quartet incorporates thematic gestures and rhythms from Eastern Europe in a way that is both traditional and contemporary.
