Boston, Mass. – The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and the Consulate General of France in Boston present a stirring exhibit by French photojournalist Remi Ochlik, who was killed in the February 2012 bombardment of Homs during the Syrian uprising along with American war journalist Marie Colvin.
The exhibit, titled “Revolutions,” will feature 56 images by Ochlik, who, until his death at age 28, covered pivotal events around the world including riots in Haiti in 2004 surrounding the fall of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, war in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2008, the cholera epidemic and presidential elections in Haiti in 2010, and the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions and the uprising and war in Libya in 2011.

The exhibit will run from January 26 until February 22, 2013 in The Art Institute of Boston (AIB) Main Gallery, 700 Beacon Street, Boston.
It is free and open to the public, and a panel discussion will be held on January 30, 2013 at 7pm in Lesley’s Washburn Auditorium, 10 Phillips Place, Cambridge featuring: Moderator Stephen Mayes; Karim Ben Khelifa, a Belgian-Tunisian photojournalist and co-founder and CEO of Emphas.is, a website designed to promote crowd-funded visual journalism; Ludovic Blecher, executive director and editor-in-chief of French newspaper Libération; and Judith Matloff, a professor at Columbia University's graduate journalism program.
“Given the crucial importance of humane and accurate reporting on the Middle East today, we are honored to have this show of Ochlik’s work,” said Stan Trecker, Dean of The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley. “His courage and intelligence resulted in compelling documentation of his experience during the Arab Spring. The photographs portray the complexities of the political and social realities for those living in the Middle East, most especially Egypt, Libya, and Syria. We are grateful to our colleagues at the Consulate General of France in Boston who are co-sponsoring this exhibition and the related events.”
Ochlik’s photographs have been published in publications such as Le Monde Magazine, Paris Match, Time and The Wall Street Journal, among others. Ochlik’s photos of the Arab Spring received the “Grand Prix Jean-Louis Caldeon” award and he also won first prize in the 2012 “World Press Photo” contest for his photograph of a Libyan rebel fighter. His work from Haiti in 2004 was awarded the Francois Chalais Award for Young Reporters and was projected at Visa pour l’Image International Photojournalism Festival.
Ochlik was born in eastern France in 1983. After graduating from high school, he went to Paris to study photography. He also started working for Wostok, a photography agency. In 2005 he founded his own agency called IP3 PRESS, with the goal of covering news in Paris and conflicts around the world. The New York Times article about this death can be read HERE.
