Hindemith: Piano Music
February 4, 2013
Marking the 50th anniversary of his death, NEC piano majors perform Paul Hindemith's Ludus tonalis in its entirety, along with a significant sampling of his other keyboard works.
Tonight's program is centered around Hindemith's work for solo piano, Ludus tonalis. Contrary to its dry subtitle ("Studies in Counterpoint, Tonal Organization and Piano Playing,") the piece offers an exploration of matters of technique, theory, inspiration, and communication through its twelve interconnected fugues.
Also featured will be Suite 1922 with its five movements based on popular dances or genres of the time (March, Shimmy, and Ragtime among them.) Based on, but by no means adhering to the styles, the piece is an exercise in satire and sarcasm.
