The Other American Revolution: Archaeology and the Pueblo Revolt of 1680
February 7, 2013
Lecture to be held at the Geological Lecture Hall, 24 Oxford St., followed by a reception at the Peabody Museum, 11 Divinity Ave.
Speaker: Matthew J. Liebmann, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Harvard University.
Why is one of the most successful indigenous rebellions in the Americas nearly unknown? In 1680 the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico rose up against their European colonizers. For the next twelve years the Pueblos lived free from Spanish oppression, a period that proved crucial in the formation of the modern American Southwest. Matthew J. Liebmann will show how today’s archaeology is changing views of this historic rebellion.
