    The Written Word

“In its communicative function, language is a set of tools with which we attempt to guide another mind to create within itself a mental representation that approximates the one we have.”

All language is relative. Words have alternative meanings regionally and languages differ across the globe. So how much does language actually affect the way we think and interpret the things we see? To what extent do the words we read and write convey our fundamental meaning? If all art is open to interpretation, does the inclusion of written words inhibit or extend the viewer’s understanding of the work? Through “The Written Word”, we offer you an exploration of the many ways in which language and text can be woven into visual art in order to offer an alternative perspective of an already multifaceted viewing experience.
