March 3, 2013
Sunday March 3, 2013, at 3:00 p.m.,Pentimento (Olav Chris Henriksen, archlute and cittern and Eric Haas, recorders and flutes) will offer a program Music from the Court of Christian IV of Denmark & Norway at the Loring-Greenough House, 12 South St, Jamaica Plain MA, as part of the Sunday Afternoon at the ‘Greenough House parlor concert series.
Christian IV ruled Denmark and Norway for 59 years, from 1577 until his death in 1648. Literature, art, architecture and music flourished during his reign, attracting the brightest talents from England (William Brade, John Dowland, Thomas Robinson and Thomas Simpson) and the Continent (Melchior Schildt, Johann Schop, Heinrich Schütz, Matthias Weckmann and others). Christian also nurtured native talent, sending Danish composers (Mogens Pedersøn, Hans Brachrogge) to Italy to study (and produce Italian madrigals...).
Pentimento will present a varied program including John Dowland's famous 'Flow my tears' (Lachrimae pavan) with elaborate ornamentation by Johann Schop, variations on the German folksong 'Gleich wie das feuer' by Melchior Schildt, dances by Matthias Mercker, Simpson and Brade, songs by Brachrogge, Pedersøn and others, and more.
Meet the Eric and Chris at afternoon tea following the program.
