Surly Girl, Ascending and Descending, is a one-woman show by actor/playwright Nancy Hurlbut that depicts 21 years of family life during and after WW II, an era when no one delved into behavioral maladies, and no one looked for causes or for solutions even if they could afford it – which included the main character’s family – wealthy Boston Brahmins, vested in both old privilege and ancient secrets. The brain of surly girl is part of the set design, and the show contains content that closely approximates post-traumatic stress syndrome, as experienced by soldiers who return from war with emotional and physical damage. www.surlygirl.net

Directed by Christopher Webb, this moving play is presented at the Multicultural Arts Center in conjunction with the 2013 Cambridge Science Festival.
