Close Cousins: Chimpanzee Program for Kids with Zarin Machanda

Discover our closest living relative, the chimpanzee, with primatologist Zarin Machanda, who studies great apes in Africa. In this hands-on and interactive presentation, we’ll handle chimpanzee “toys” and “tools”, look at real chimp skulls and teeth, watch short videos of chimps in the wild, and learn how similar chimps and humans really are. Regular Museum admission rates apply

Zarin Machanda received her PhD from the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University in 2012. Her research revolves around understanding the factors that shape the quality and development of social relationships among primates and specifically chimpanzees. Zarin has spent the last 14 years working with both captive and wild chimpanzees. She has spent almost three years living and conducting research in western Uganda.

Parking/Directions: Paid parking available at the nearby 52 Oxford Street garage (see website for details). The museum is a 7-8 minute walk through historic Harvard Yard from the Harvard Square Red Line T stop, or 15 minutes walk from Porter Square MBTA commuter rail stop.
