    Howard Brofsky Quintet

Howard Brofsky's sound, on his preferred cornet, is sublime and always tasteful. Whether playing a ballad or tearing through bebop changes, he never forgets that the melody is what it's about. Brofsky knows a little bit about melody by virtue of having been around the jazz block and earning the moniker "Dr. Bebop." Brofsky picked up the horn at age 17, following Charlie Parker and listening to Roy Eldridge and digging the new bebop sound in the mid-1940s. After several years in Paris, he left jazz and turned to classical music scholarship, earning his master's and doctoral degrees in 18th-century Italian classical music and taking a faculty post at Queens College. But Brofsky couldn't stay away from jazz, and since picking up the horn again at age 46, he has never stopped playing. Octogenarian or not, Brofsky shows no signs of letting up as he continues to teach and perform regularly. His annual VJC concert, joined by fellow jazz legends, is always an inspiring event.
