Master Class in Contemporary Vocal Styles with David Thorne Scott

Brookline Music School (BMS) is pleased to present a Master Class in Contemporary Vocal Styles led by guest artist David Thorne Scott on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2:00pm. The master class will cover contemporary vocal style, improvisation and vocal arranging. The public is welcome to observe the class, though participation is only open to voice students of Brookline Music School.

David Thorne Scott, Associate Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music, is an active performer in many styles. His jazz album "Shade" was chosen as a top 5 CD by the Jazz Education Journal, while Cadence Magazine says "he phrases like a saxophone player and is as slippery and hip as the young Mel Tormé." David plays piano and sings original music on his pop/jazz crossover album "Hopeful Romantic," produced by Gold- and Platinum-award winner Anthony Resta (Duran Duran, Collective Soul). As a member of the vocal quartet Syncopation, called "a 21st-century Manhattan Transfer or Lambert, Hendricks and Ross‚" by the Boston Globe, he sang and played trumpet with the Boston Pops. David is a classical singer as well, performing Renaissance and Baroque music with ensembles such as Blue Heron and Cut Circle. At Berklee College of Music, David teaches voice, improvisation, ensembles, and vocal arranging. "As a singer," he says, "everything you do feeds into your art. So it is important to learn about harmony, technique, and how to play different instruments, but also to read great books, to see great art, to be a part of a community, and to love."
