The program includes Joachim Raf’s Sinfonietta, Op. 188 (1873), Dmitri Shostakovich’s Moscow Cheryomushki, Op. 105 (1957-58), and Johannes Brahms’ Serenade No. 2, Op. 16 (1859). The double wind quintet is a seldom heard ensemble, but one for which there is a surprisingly rich repertoire of both original compositions and arrangements. Doubling the five voices of the woodwind quintet allows for rich sonorities, complex interplay of voices, and the character of a small orchestra.
