Wei Zhongle (Carbondale, Illinois) Shenzhen (Asheville, NC) Jason Sanford (Cambridge, Mass.)
May 28, 2013
The dissonant whirlwind of Wei Zhongle is reminiscent of Aksak Maboul, or somewhere between Sun City Girls and Philip Glass. Guitarist and vocalist Rob Jacobs writes and arranges the engaging but challenging music for this five-piece consisting of guitar, percussion (Sam Klickner), bass (Carly Lappin), and two clarinets (Jon Goodman and John McCowen).
Shenzhen is the recording and musical performance project of Nick Scavo and Alex Cummings. Shenzhen hones in on an aggressive and uncertain middle ground between the guitar and laptop. This is human vs. machine music: deep narrative content supported by dissonant sub-frequencies and harsh samples.
Jason Sanford is a founding member and instrument maker in Boston’s avant-rock band NEPTUNE. His continuing experiments with sound have led to development of instruments such as the Feedback Organ and the Asynchronous Looper.
