Mars and Venus: Tales of Love and War (Belly Dancing)
June 16, 2013
Johara and Snake Dance Theater Company presents “Mars and Venus: Tales of Love and War” a Middle Eastern fantasy and fusion belly dance show and fundraiser for Empowered Voices, www.empowered-voices.org.
Armed with silks, swords, staffs, feathers and fire, Snake Dance Theater Company, along with the professional dancers from around New England, explore the themes of love and war. Proceeds from the even will go to support Empowered Voices and their mission to empower women in Uganda’s Mubende district through creation and distribution of fair-trade products and community-driven programs.
The evening’s program includes a theatrical event exploring through dance the powerful emotions wrought by love and war. In addition there will be a silent auction and raffle that includes items made by the women helped through Empowered Voices. Also included are multi-media displays, information tables, vending and light refreshments for purchase.
New dances by Johara and Snake Dance Theater Company include: New Fusion Sword dance, Saudi Arabian Khaleeji, Egyptian Saidi stick-dance, Venus and Mars Oriental, Sufi-inspired whirling dervish dance and Tango-belly fusion. Enjoy a wide variety of dance styles in the belly dance genre and beyond. Guest performers include: Sabrina, Aria Michaels Paradise, Hybrid, Garabed Setrekian, Brookline Academy of Dance, Tamsyn Bindal, Lady Snake and Laura Blake.
Legally blind choreographer, Johara (Juliette Cusick), has been producing dance concerts in the largely unknown genre of Middle Eastern Belly Dance in Boston area theaters since 2001. She has been featured on the covers of the Brookline and Watertown Tabs and appeared in the Boston Globe, Herald, and Phoenix for her work. She has performed in Turkey, Greece, Brazil, and across the United States. Venus and Mars: Tales of Love and War is her 11th full-scale theatrical production in the Boston area.
Johara and Snake Dance Theater seek to educate the public on the artistic and cultural heritage of Middle Eastern Belly Dance and elevate the art form to its rightful place in the esteem of a growing audience, through entertaining and dynamic performances that use both traditional and innovative new forms of Middle Eastern dance and music.
