    When mandolin player Bill Monroe put together a band in 1939, the Blue Grass Boys, he blended the country, gospel and blues music that he had learned as a boy. It was music of Appalachia, a sound mixed with traditional music of Scotland, Ireland and England and spiced with jazz.
