Richard Goode, piano & Sarah Shafer, soprano

Master pianist Richard Goode returns to Rockport Music with on-the-rise soprano Sarah Shafer to perform Brahms, Schubert, and Mahler, a repertoire the two have been perfecting for years.

Sarah Shafer on performing with Richarde Goode: “My musical senses all go into high gear when singing with him; he is such a sensitive listener as he plays, and I never want to miss anything he might toss over to me!”

    Richard Goode, piano

Hailed for music-making of tremendous emotional power, depth, and sensitivity, Richard Goode is known as one of today’s master musicians and as a leading interpreter of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and Schubert.  Goode probes the inner reaches of works by any composer, infusing every measure with the utmost expressivity, making his musicianship an exciting combination of grandness and humility, boldness and depth.

“Goode’s playing is thrilling from first to last.”  Gramophone

    Sarah Shafer

A rising operatic star, soprano Sarah Shafer is praised for her “luminous voice” and “intensely expressive interpretations” (The New York Times).A graduate of the Curtis Institute and two-time resident of Marlboro Music Festival, she recently made her professional opera debut at the Glynebourne Festival and the BBC Proms in London’s Royal Albert Hall, and has performed as soloist with several notable symphonies like the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Quad City Symphony, and Richmond and Maryland Symphony Orchestras.  She and Richard Goode have been collaborating and performing together since 2010.

“[She displayed] a light, lucid soprano and posed presence that easily projects both vulnerability and backbone…Hers is not a large or rich voice, but is a persuasive one. In Mahler’s “Himmlische Leben” she landed on the peaceful end of each verse as if she were bringing the audience to a desert oasis.” – The New York Times
