    Rebecca Clarke and Her Circle

    Vaughan Williams, Britten and Palestrina

Cappella Clausura brings you this rare opportunity to hear the complete a cappella works of REBECCA CLARKE -- one of the most important British composers of the 20th century. Written between 1906 and 1943, these twelve pieces are a microcosm of Clarke's musical world, yet completely original, marked by her incredible ear for language and mesmerizing harmonies. There isn't a moment of filler; every note counts in these complex, affecting works, with poetry by Shakespeare, Rossetti, Shelley, and Tennyson. We perform her music alongside works by her colleagues Vaughan Williams and Britten, and her early influence Palestrina. Britten highlights include his famous Hymn to St. Cecilia, written on a poem by Auden for the patron saint of music, on whose feast day Britten was born 100 years ago.
