    Maceo Parker

Presented by at Shalin Liu Performance Center

    January 25, 2014

    Maceo Parker

Maceo Parker stands among the legends of Funk, forging the first half of his stellar career as a sideman for the genre’s forefathers James Brown and George Clinton.  From being an essential voice in Brown’s horn section to helping steer George Clinton and Parliament’s Mothership Connection to platinum status, his soulful saxophone playing and vocals are part of funk music history.  As a soloist and bandleader for the last two decades, he has brought his seminal sound to collaborations with Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, Dave Matthews Band, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Prince.  In 2012, he received the Les Victoires du Jazz in Paris: a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to music, as well as an Icon Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival.

"He's no bebopper, reborn or otherwise. His roots are the church and the blues... his sound is joyful, cutting ribbon of light and heat burnished by grit and soul. There's no doubt about it, ‘There's only one Maceo.’"  Downbeat Magazine

"… When I think of Maceo Parker I think of legendary funk master and horn player, and… he's still doing it. And that to me makes a really legendary person."  Ani DiFranco

“A consummate entertainer whose band shares his single-minded mission to get audiences to their feet and leave them moved and grooved.”  San Francisco Chronicle
