SouthEnd by NorthEast: Artists from Boston and the North Shore Meet On Rocky Neck in Gloucester Rocky Neck Art Colony’s Artistic Director, Adriana Mederos, curates an invitational group show of five artists from Boston’s South End studios and four artists from the North Shore of Boston MA. Curated by Adriana “Gigi” Mederos, the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s first and only Latina Artistic Director in their long history, the exhibition brings together five artists from Boston’s South End studios and four artists from the North Shore of Boston MA – communities that are far apart, though their reinvention and reinvigoration of the landscape and natural forms as a theme for their art work clearly unites them. The work shown in this exhibition will be in a wide range of mediums; including encaustic, acrylics, oils, inks and watercolors – on paper, canvas, board and vellums. Included in the show is work by artists: Adam Batliner, Cathy Bennigson, Susan Blatt, Linda Cordner, Kay Ives, Elynn Kroger, Ben MacAdam, Mary Bucci McCoy and Martha Wakefield. This diverse and exciting group of work challenges the audience’s notion of the landscape in art as each artist reinterprets both what constitutes a landscape painting and/or what served as their “jumping off point” for their investigation into the landscape or natural forms. The landscape in art has a strong tradition in the Cape Ann area; and in the Rocky Neck Art Colony, historically. This show was created to enlarge the conversation around landscape painting to include a wider variety of contemporary mediums and styles of expression, and to serve as a conduit for engagement for these two far-flung art communities and a gateway to meaningful dialogue.
