El Arte Flamenco: Lecture & Performance with Roberto Rios and His Ensemble
October 19, 2013
Join us for an extraordinary musical exploration of the Gypsies of Spain, in an intimate and intense performance and discussion by musician and educator Roberto Rios and his ensemble El Arte Flamenco. The evening will focus on the development of Spanish folklore and flamenco from its earliest beginnings to its current place in the realm of World Music, and will be highlighted by examples of the various musical forms by live dancers and musicians. Through lecture and performance, we will come to an understanding of the different cultures and musical styles that developed into the Andalusian folk dance and music, and provide examples of these in contrast with the arrival of the Gypsies in Spain, the Spanish Inquisition, and the resulting development of flamenco as it is known today.
Besides being an accomplished flamenco guitarist, Mr. Ríos and his group are also educators with years of experience presenting educational programs for people who appreciate and/or who want to expand their knowledge of the Spanish culture. Roberto Ríos has been a guitarist for over fifty years. He has appeared with José Greco, Omayra Amaya, the Rogelio Rodriguez Spanish Dancers, Gitanerías, the Ramón de los Reyes Spanish Dance Theatre, and the Ballet Español de Clara Ramona, as well as performing with the Houston Pops Orchestra and the Central Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra.
