Musicians of Aston Magna: The Baroque Violin at its Zenith

Four leading lights of the Aston Magna summer festival present music of the Baroque at its height: Daniel Stepner, baroque violin; Teresa Wakim, soprano; Laura Jeppesen, viola da gamba; and Peter Sykes, harpsichord. On the menu: a delightful Bach sonata for violin and harpsichord, one of the all-time greats (a different one at each venue), and Tartini’s famous “Devil’s Trill” sonata, which evokes the unearthly beauty of a dream. A rare sonata by P.H. Erlebach gives a glimpse of the generation before Bach. Soprano Teresa Wakim, with a voice that is “gorgeous, profoundly expressive” (The Plain Dealer, 2011), will bring arias by Handel inspired by Nature’s beauty, and dramatic music by Henry Purcell—love, despair (the “Plainte” from the Fairy Queen) and a magnificent, love-crazed mad song. Arias from Bach’s Wedding Cantata close the evening joyfully: love is fulfilled at last. A bountiful feast!
