Cape Cod Symphony Classics II Straight from the Heart
November 9 - November 10, 2013
Jung-Ho Pak, Conductor | Amit Peled, Cello
It’s light-hearted, cheerful and humorous. The good friend you can’t wait to arrive. The good friend you’re sad to see go. Beethoven affectionately called it “my little Symphony in F” and liked it “so much more” than his Seventh or Ninth. Ironically, at the time he composed this, he had lost his country to war and his “immortal beloved” to another. He’d also lost most of his hearing. Somehow, this feel-good symphony came straight from his heart.
Amit Peled grew up in a rural Kibbutz in Israel. He fell in love with the cello’s sounds listening to Pablo Casals’ recordings. For three years, he played quartets for soldiers. Now he’s playing Casal’s 18th century Dofrillo, which still harbors the scent of the master’s pipe smoke. He’ll reunite this exquisite instrument and Haydn’s great concerto with the technique, stamina, heart and “chutzpah” to do justice to both.
