Discovery Ensemble Presents: What is Melody?
Presented by Discovery Ensemble
October 20, 2013
"What Is Melody?" is comprised of three works that appear to bear no relation to each other whatsoever. The Sturm und Drang of Mozart’s great D Minor Piano Concerto with its simmering and explosive drama, the slippery, glistening modernism of Ligeti’s Melodien, and Sibelius’s pithy and moody Sixth Symphony – there are no obvious connections to be found here. And one of the works, which is actually named "Melodies," is the piece that most listeners will probably think of as being the least melodious. But therein lies the point. There seems to be no consensus among these three composers about what a melody really is. We invite the audience to immerse themselves in the very different worlds of these three masterpieces, and to hear for themselves how each of these composers has redefined "melody" to suit the special nature of what he has to say. Shai Wosner, a wonderfully poetic young pianist from Israel, is the soloist in the Mozart.
