    October 4, 2013 - January 5, 2014

River of Gold: Precolumbian Treasures from Sitio Conte

'River of Gold: Precolumbian Treasures from Sitio Conte' features Precolumbian goldwork from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology’s excavations at the ancient cemetery site of Sitio Conte in central Panama. The exhibition is comprised of 123 exquisite pieces of Precolumbian Panamanian goldwork ca. 700-1100 CE: embossed plaques, nose ornaments, gold-sheathed ear rods, pendants cast by the lost-wax method, bells, and beads, as well as polychrome ceramics and objects made of precious and semi-precious stones, whale-tooth ivory, and bone. The goldwork is examined in light of modern interpretations of its significance from social, ideological, and technological perspectives.
