The Year of Magical Thinking
November 7 - November 9, 2013
The Salem Theatre Company is proud to present a three-performance run of Joan Didion’s acclaimed theatrical adaptation of her novel, The Year of Magical Thinking. The production, directed by Christine Elizabeth Fogarty and featuring Anne Kraft, will run November 7, 8 & 9 in the STC Theater, 90 Lafayette Street in downtown Salem. The production is sponsored by Structures North Consulting Engineers, Inc. of 60 Washington Street in Salem.
In this adaptation of her award-winning, bestselling memoir (which The New York Times called "an indelible portrait of loss and grief...a haunting portrait of a four-decade-long marriage), Joan Didion transforms the story of the sudden and unexpected loss of her husband and their only daughter into a stunning and powerful one-woman play. The play begins, "This happened on December 30, 2003. That may seem a while ago but it won't when it happens to you...and it will happen to you."
“We are very excited to present this as part of our Second Stage Series,” said John Fogle Artistic Director for Salem Theatre Company. “Ms. Kraft approached us about presenting it, and we felt that this was a wonderful opportunity for us.”
Ms. Kraft, appearing courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association, the professional actor’s union, has credits from coast to coast and spent many years in New York City and Hollywood, CA. Her regional theater credits include leading roles in The Glass Menagerie, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, Plaza Suite, The Sea Gull, Rumors, To Kill a Mockingbird, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Death and the Maiden. Her directing credits include The Cemetery Club, Sylvia, A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking, Vital Signs, Love Letters, Wild Dreams—Discovering Henry M. Flagler, and Arthur Miller’s After the Fall. Of Ms. Didion’s play, Anne says, “I feel it has an extremely important and positive message to share: As Joan says, ‘Life changes in the instant’…. I hope you take with you this message: ‘do it now… don’t wait …just go with the flow and enjoy life in the NOW!’”
