UMass Amherst's 150th Anniversary Concert at Symphony Hall

As part of its yearlong 150th anniversary celebration as the Commonwealth’s flagship campus, the University of Massachusetts Amherst will host a special concert at Boston’s Symphony Hall on Friday, October 25th at 8:00 p.m., featuring different genres of music and dance. Since 1974, as many as 1,900 spectators have gathered annually on UMass Amherst’s historic 1400-acre campus for a special collaborative performance by the talented troupes representing the University’s Department of Music and Dance. This year, UMass Amherst is bringing the Multiband Pops concert to Boston for an evening featuring the University Orchestra, Minuteman Marching Band, Chamber Choir, Wind Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet, Jazz Ensemble and the UMass Dancers. The two-hour concert will feature nearly 600 student artists performing over 20 different musical selections, including eight lively numbers presented by the University’s beloved Minuteman Marching Band. Beginning as a group of ten musicians in 1878, the Minuteman Marching Band is now 395 strong and is recognized as one of the nation’s top marching bands. The Minuteman Marching Band is the 1997 recipient of the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Louis C. Sudler Trophy. According to Jeff Cox, Chair of the Department of Music and Dance, Stand for UMass: The Concert marks the third Symphony Hall performance by UMass Amherst students. “We’re delighted to see our bright, talented and dedicated students return to Symphony Hall, as part of our 150th anniversary,” said Cox. “We look forward to celebrating with our students, staff, alumni, family, friends and the Greater Boston community.” Stand for UMass: The Concert is part of a two day citywide celebration featuring a cake cutting ceremony at the State House with elected officials and a free lunchtime concert by the Minuteman Marching Band at Faneuil Hall, both on Friday, October 25th, and the Homecoming football game against Western Michigan at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, October 26th.
