Silk and Bamboo: Music From China

Silk strings and bamboo flutes evoke the casual atmosphere of the teahouse, where Chinese Sizhu music is commonly heard. Experience the expressions of a vibrant tradition: the lyricism of ancient song-poems, the furious energy of historic battlefields and the meditative calm of flower petals falling silently to the ground.

Hold tight as the evening brings us into the 21st century with the Boston premiere of Yu-Hui Chang’s “Pu Songling’s Bizarre Tales.” Drawing on classical tales of the supernatural by Pu Songling of the Qing Dynasty, Brandeis composer Yu-Hui Chang’s 2011 composition will pull you into a soundscape where nothing is as it seems.

See Chang talk about her own journey composing the piece below!
