    February 7, 2014

With a cast of famous soccer stars – including Brazilian legend Pele – accompanying Max Von Sydow, Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone through a match between Nazi players and Allied POWs, Victory emerges in Huston’s filmography between the musical Annie and horror film Phobia. Directing a spate of ready-to-shoot highly commercial genre pictures, Huston displays excellent sportsmanship playing this game. Amid suspenseful escape plan hatching and rather benign references to the actual atrocities, the very implausibility of the plot and its themes of international camaraderie enhance the psycho-cultural poignancy of this retrospective pipedream. The unwittingly engrossing melodrama is gratifyingly heightened by the dexterity of the players, who unleash their most graceful choreography for the monumentally palliative play-off with Hollywood’s Nazi Germany.
