    2014 Festival of the Arts

The Festival of the Arts is a celebration of arts in the community and across the South Shore. It includes juried art, photography, and craft competition and exhibits; art sales; entertainment; refreshments; artist plein air demonstrations, and activities to amuse and entertain all members of the family.

Puppet making and parade. Community groups will be working on building large totem puppets over time, with artists, The Parade is intended to become a regular part of the event, growing larger every year and happening more spontaneously each year because of the engagement of an ever-broadening slide of the community. There will be kids’ activities on site to complement the parade, including a storyteller, street clown, art wall, and children’s tent.

Cartoonist Kent Archer. Kent is from Marshfield and got his introduction to cartooning when he took a class with a cartoonist at NRAS. He is creating a large black-and-white cartoon that will be blown up and then cut into over 80 separate 8.5-11 sheets with outlines of sections of the cartoon on them. Kids will be mobilized to decorate the various pieces individually, and then they’ll be reassembled into a unique work of art.

Juried art and artisans competitions. Both hanging art (painting, drawing, photography, etc.) and crafts (including wood, metal, and textile) will be juried, and prizes will be awarded. Works will be for sale both in the GAR Hall and adjacent firehouse and in artisans’ tents along the sidewalks.

Street art. There will be both artist demonstrations spontaneously along the streets and kids making chalk pictures in middle of Old Main Street (one of the oldest sections of town), several blocks of which are closed off for the duration of the weekend.
