With Liberty and Music for All: Music of the American Moravians

The acclaimed period-instrument chamber ensemble Musicians of the Old Post Road presents "With Liberty and Music for All: Music of the American Moravians," a program of fascinating and rarely heard vocal and instrumental music from the 18th-century American Moravian community of Salem, North Carolina. Arriving from Central Europe in the 1740s, the Moravians established communities in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio. Music had a central role in their lives and activities.

In collaboration with the acclaimed vocal duo "Les Sirènes" (Kristen Watson and Kathryn Mueller, sopranos) they will perform beautiful and expressive vocal solos and duets with instrumental ensemble by Moravian composers Christian Geisler, Johann Freyt, J. F. Peter, Johannes Herbst, and others. The program will also include instrumental chamber music that was performed at the Moravians musical gatherings. These will include a flute quartet by Joseph Haydn, a sinfonia by J. C. F. Bach, a trio sonata for viola, cello, and continuo by Johann Daniel Grimm, and a string trio by the Moravian composer John Antes.
