     The newly founded Semiosis Quartet presents three works united by an elegiac impulse. Gorecki’s String Quartet No. 2 makes loving reference to Beethoven’s early quartets, while John Zorn pays homage to French philosopher/Surrealist Georges Bataille and Anton Webern's Bagatelles for string quartet in his piece The Dead Man. Gorecki’s String Quartet No. 2 makes loving reference to Beethoven’s early quartets, while John Zorn pays homage to French philosopher/Surrealist Georges Bataille and Anton Webern's Bagatelles for string quartet in his piece The Dead Man. Likewise, Boston composer Stefanie Lubkowski’s “This is the light of autumn…,” is an homage to Louise Gluck’s poem “October” and the sense of mortality and grief that it expresses.
