Glowing like stained glass in jeweled tones of ruby, gold and silver, the joyful and evocative wall hangings of fabric artist Andrea Pritchard will be on display in the Weston Public Library from Monday, June 2 through Sunday, June 29.

All are cordially invited to the opening celebration on Thursday, June 5, from 7 to 9 PM. Refreshments will be served and the improvisational group InterPlayers will perform brief skits inspired by the wall hangings.

Entitled “Soul Stories,” the exhibition will show 10 wall pieces, each more than 4’ x 7’ in size, made between 2011 and 2014.

Mysterious and familiar at the same time, the dreamscapes in Pritchard’s painterly murals are populated by figures that resemble old-world marionettes. Her images evoke the magical exuberance of paintings by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) and the sensuous gilded figures of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918).

Constructed of fabrics in an astonishing array of colors and textures, the hangings are like bas-relief sculptures. But, unlike a sculptor who carves images out of a smooth surface, Pritchard adds layer upon layer to build her three-dimensional compositions.

Grouped together, Pritchard’s murals also tell stories, chronicling a quest for wholeness and peace. In images with the universal and timeless quality of fairy tale illustrations, Pritchard, 72, presents an internal family peopled by angels, goddesses, loved ones, fairies, cats, birds, and on occasion, God.

Writing about her art-making process, Pritchard says, “Images form in my imagination. I start pinning fabric that suggests these images onto rug backing that I hang from a rod on the wall. Soon my guides or muses pop ideas into my head, and combinations of cloth form on the floor. Sometimes the story leads, sometimes the materials lead, sometimes the composition leads, but magically they all work together to make a new story from my soul.”
