    Kid-Curated Art Show

Some first accomplishments in a child’s life are unforgettable, rites of passage such as learning a first word, losing a first tooth…and curating a first gallery exhibit. The students at Agassiz Baldwin Afterschool have been busy collaborating on 2D and 3D artwork that they will install in the Chandler Gallery. This project-based learning activity introduces children to the gallery process, from brainstorming a theme to creating artwork to presenting their work at a reception. They even design a guestbook so they can see who has visited the gallery.

According to afterschool teacher Emily Somma, the younger students “don’t really understand what an art show is until they see their work on the walls.” Their anticipation builds as publicity postcards arrive, and the children experience the thrill of seeing their art reproduced in a glossy format. At the reception, children proudly present their pieces to relatives and friends, and they even linger over their classmates’ projects. “The kids take an interest in each other’s work, which is really nice to see,” says Somma.

When the exhibit ends, the students bring their artwork home to add to their personal galleries. Then, with their first gallery opening under their belts, they can begin thinking of new ideas for their next show, next year.

“The Kid-Curated Art Show” is at the Chandler Gallery at 20 Sacramento Street in Cambridge. From May 19-May 29th, artwork from the students at the Maria L. Baldwin School will be on display with a closing reception on May 29th at 5:30pm as part of the Baldwin School Arts Night. From June 2-14, students from Agassiz Baldwin Afterschool will display their artwork, and the closing reception will be held as part of Agassiz Baldwin Community’s Play Day on June 14 from 1-4pm. Agassiz Baldwin Community is a private, non-profit organization with a forty-year history of quality programs and services in the Cambridge community.
