From the Imperial Court: Music for the House of Hapsburg
Since making their North American début at the June 2009 Festival, the young singers of Stile Antico have rapidly established themselves as a favorite on the BEMF concert stage and one of the most sought-after Renaissance vocal ensembles in the world. Performing in the BEMF Concert Season for their fifth consecutive year, the group explores the music associated with three great Hapsburg monarchs: Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, his successor and grandson Charles V, and Charles’s son King Philip II of Spain, who married Mary I of England. They employed many of the finest Spanish, Flemish, and English Renaissance composers, including Morales, Josquin, Isaac, Gombert, and Tallis. The glorious works on this program range from heart-wrenching laments to solemn and joyous motets, every one truly fit for an emperor.
