Stile Antico: Song of Songs - Sensuous Polyphony from the Courts of Renaissance Europe
June 12, 2009
The erotic poetry of the biblical Song of Solomon consistently inspired the masters of the continental Renaissance to produce some of their most ardent music. Love, desire, and seduction are explored in this program, through a rich selection of motets by Spanish composers, and others whose works would have been known in Spain. The program traces an expressive arch from the heat and intensity of Gombert and Lhéritier, to the vivacious, madrigalian conclusion in the works of Vivanco and Victoria. Quickly establishing a reputation as one of the most exciting and original ensembles in the field today, the Grammy-nominated Stile Antico makes its North American debut with this performance!
