From its six-year run in New York City to a world tour from London to Seoul, the celebrated smash hit The Donkey Show now takes Boston by storm, bringing the ultimate disco experience – a crazy circus of mirror balls and feathered divas, of roller skaters and hustle queens. Come party on the dance floor to all the 70s disco hits you know by heart as the show unfolds around you. The Donkey Show tells the story of A Midsummer Night’s Dream through the great 70s anthems, including “We are Family,” “I Love the Nightlife,” “Car Wash,” “Ring My Bell,” and “Last Dance.” The enchanted forest of Shakespeare’s classic comedy becomes the glittered world of retro disco as the lovers escape from their real lives to experience a night of dream, abandon, and fantasy.

      The music was really good, the singing bad, not much acting, a bit confusing not easy to follow. There is a long line outside to get in the theatre. The dancers were entertaining and some of them... Expand

      The music was really good, the singing bad, not much acting, a bit confusing not easy to follow. There is a long line outside to get in the theatre. The dancers were entertaining and some of them pretty funny. I had purchase the tickets with a code listed on the METRO, but the code didn't work so had to pay full price, the theatre forgot to activate the code and did not give refunds. Not worth $25, more like $10. Collapse

      Okay, at certain moments I had fun. Out in line with my friends, entering the space, dancing on a cube.... The rest? Lame!!!! If the singing and dancing had been impressive enough, I wouldn't even care about the fact that there was absolutely NO good text worth listening to. But the singing was TERRIBLE, (like they had to amp up the background music over the lead actress's voice every song. It sounded like a karaoke bar.) The dancing? There was not a step of difficult choreography to marvel at. If I'm gonna see fluff disco "shakespeare" I at least want something impressive to watch. The performers did have great energy, but aside from the off-key singing, they just weren't given anything difficult to flex their muscles for. I don't know, I buy that people writing some of these reviews had a good time... but "transformative"? Are you kidding? Yikes.... I pre-gamed by downing two vodka sodas before the show, was READY to get down... and left with a headache. Collapse

      I am your grandmother and I am a Shakespeare scholar and I had a hell of a good time at the ART this evening. I was nursing babies in the 70's, so I have no idea what that music was about, but I thought it was a gorgeous noisy meditation on a play that celebrates gender wackiness, crazy power trips, and making an ass of yourself. I'm the one you saw dancing in the sensible shoes. Collapse

      I love Theater with a capital T as much as the next gal, and this wasn't it... but it was a ton of fun! Lots of sexy actors go-going around in cool costumes, fully-committed comic improv interaction, every disco hit you can think of - what's wrong with that? Even my date, who breathes the classics and and hates (in his own words) "disco, dancing, night clubs, karaoke, crowds and fun in general" admitted that he had a good time. I loved how people my age (over 40) got right back into the scene and shook their groove things one more time. And, the cute youn'uns in the audience just had a blast. The vibe reminded me of a 70s Blue Man Group, and I'd highly recommend this as fun girls/boys night out event. Collapse

From being disco danced through the front door, to 'shaking my groove thing' with the disco boys, I had a complete and total blast!! Karaoke, cross dressing, comedy, disco and Willy Boy, make for a not to be missed evening!! In the words of The Governator; I'll be back!! Collapse

At least this time around, drama turns out to be an attenuated side show at the circus.       I've been hoping for years that the A.R.T. would finally live up to its innate promise... but I've never fully enjoyed a production there. Things were either too strange-for-the-sake-of-strange (bobrauschenbergamerica) or just poorly executed (Donnie Darko, The Communist Dracula Pageant, The Seagull). Diane Paulus was brought in to shake things up and right off the bat, she's done it. The Donkey Show is NOT typical A.R.T. fare - the blue hairs who previously made up the bulk of the subscription base are no longer their target. Instead, the idea is to get a new generation of theater-goers interested in the various promises of "theater" and that's what this show does. Its debauched, its hilarious, its a lot of fun, and its wildly different from a "normal" show. Divisive? Absolutely. But if you have an open mind, you'll probably find it to be a lot of fun!       I couldn't agree more to the review of Hapi Phace. If that's what we have to expect from the ART in the future in the Zero Arrow space, it would be my last visit there.

SO telling that in the program the donkey show advertises "Hold your bachelorette party @ the donkey show." "Audience empowerment," is what the art director claims . . . well if dumbing down theater to 99.95% flash & .05 percent content is empowering the audience, she's successful. If you love the theater, drama, and Shakespeare stay away. If you love 20 year-old, loud, drunken, text-messaging, co-eds, this is the show for you. Collapse

      Last Friday I biked across Cambridge in my rain gear with an overweight backpack and a change of shoes. Let's face it: waiting in line for The Donkey Show, I wasn't anyone's definition of cool. Two hours later, I left Club Oberon with a "VIP pass" inviting me to come back with a friend--apparently the result of my conspicuously joyous dancing (and smart marketing). Talk about transformative theater! Boston has its share of visionary, energetic directors at the moment, but Diane Paulus is the first to realize a truly revolutionary production. Yes, this show delivers great, sexy entertainment: you get sparkly boys, butterfly boobs, and 70's bling galore. But The Donkey Show is also a celebration of US, of our community, of the collective effervescence that we as audience radiate across the fourth wall. I laughed and cheered with people of all ages, races, and sexual orientation as the drama embraced us. Go be transformed by The Donkey Show--Boston theater, change has arrived! Collapse

      VERY loose interpretation of Shakespeare-the story was recognizable but not even a quote from the play. But what a fun venue!

      C-dust pinch-hits for fairy dust in The Donkey Show, Diane Paulus & Randy Weiner's disco-set riff on A Midsummer Night's Dream. Forget the juice of "a little western flower" with which fairy king Oberon and hench-sprite Puck mix up the libidos of the hormone-drenched characters charging through Shakespeare's Athenian wood. In the Studio 54–inspired environs of Club Oberon (formerly Zero Arrow Theatre), where this theatrical dance party unfolds through October 31, Dr. Wheelgood, a gold-lamé-clad Puck on roller skates, lures human quarry into a curtained-off corner from which they emerge staggering and tumbling, a residue of white powder on upper lips and fake moustaches. And did I mention that the androgynous principals are played by women, whereas fairy queen Tytania's posse is a quartet of buff young men in tight boy shorts, glitter, and not much else?
      Before you go running for Harold Bloom and the sheriff, let me add that this energetic marriage of disco, Dream, and Tijuana tourist entertainment may be the most alive, immersive piece of theater I've ever been dunked in. Collapse
