This spectacular ceremony of remembrance is inspired by Buddhist rituals and takes place in one of Boston's most beautiful green spaces: historic Forest Hills Cemetery, a Victorian cemetery and arboretum established in 1848. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the grass while experiencing a multi-cultural program of music and dance. Then decorate lanterns with calligraphy and messages to friends and family who have died. At dusk, light the candle in your lantern and float it across Lake Hibiscus while the sun sets. At the end of the evening, a thousand lanterns drift across the water, symbolizing the soul's journey and our continued connection with the dead. Performers include: Master Tsuji's Samurai Taiko Drummers, gospel singer Ron Murphy and friends, the Chinese dance of Tsai-Fong Dance Troupe, Quincy Choral Society, traditional Balinese dance by Sanggar Kinanthi, and kimono-clad students visiting from Japan from Showa Institute. There is no lighting after dark; bring a flashlight to assist your departure.
