The theatrical folk-rock art collective Balthrop, Alabama combines the siblings Lauren and Pascal Balthrop with former members of Rainer Maria and their Brooklyn neighbors. Artist Michael Arthur accompanies the band on pen and ink, illustrating the songs live with the drawings projected behind the band in the vaudeville tradition of a "chalk talk," a precursor to animation. The music is clever and darkly funny and the art is astonishing to watch. The band "combines breezy, melody-driven pop with Neutral Milk Hotel-style existential wailing." --Village Voice.
