Rainsford Island, for almost a century untended, has played a pivotal role as Boston’s best line of defense against smallpox, yellow fever and other perceived security threats, both epidemiological and social. Curator Elizabeth Carella shares the island’s colorful history of epidemics, shipwrecks and daring escapes.
